GPSC funding supports division collaboration and recruitment success on Vancouver Island

Feb 26, 2018

A “one-for-all” approach to GP recruitment on Vancouver Island has yielded success and a model for regional collaboration elsewhere in BC.

Island divisions formed the Vancouver Island Regional Recruitment and Retention Working Group to facilitate a collaborative approach to attracting and recruiting doctors to the region. Funding from the GPSC and additional one-time funding from the GPSC Recruitment and Retention Steering Committee enabled the group to work together and develop and outline a strategy that other divisions considering a collaborative approach to recruitment might use. The strategy has been shared alongside other useful resources on practiceinbc.ca, a one-stop portal website aimed at helping new GPs join BC communities and local divisions attract and retain family doctors.

The group recently achieved recruitment success by rolling out a multi-division welcome process for a husband and wife physician team from Ireland. The new doctors toured four communities in the south island region, ultimately deciding to join a Nanaimo-area clinic. Their arrival will prevent two sets of retirement-related unattachments in a clinic that was considering closing altogether if those positions had not been filled.
