GPSC Member Named President, College of Family Physicians of Canada

On November 14, 2014, Dr Garey Mazowita was elected as the president of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) for 2014-15.

Dr Mazowita received his medical degree from the University of Manitoba in 1979 and his certification in family medicine in 1989. In 2000, he became a fellow of CFPC, an organization that establishes standards for the training and certification of family physicians and represents 30,000 members across the country.

In 2008, Dr Mazowita was first appointed as a Ministry of Health representative to the General Practice Service Committee (GPSC) and is the GPSC representative on the Shared Care Committee. Dr Mazowita continues to be instrumental in advocating and influencing change for primary in BC, including participating in the development and implementation of a number of collaborative committee initiatives such as Musculoskeletal and Pain modules of the Practice Support Program, and the award-winning Rapid Access to Consultative Expertise (RACE) program.

Dr Mazowita is currently active in education, research, and clinical practice as a clinical professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia.

In 2010 Dr Mazowita won the Donald I. Rice Award for outstanding leadership in the discipline of family medicine.
